Conflict Resolution skills are invaluable tools to help you effectively assist others negotiate and collaborate through difficult disputes. Essential skill sets of conflict resolution will help you improve your resume, become more effective in your current job, and may help you advance in your workplace. As part of this program you will learn active listening skills, authentic communication, and collaborative problem solving. Each of these skills improve your overall emotional intelligence as you learn to understand the underlying emotions of others, decrease tensions, and increase your self-awareness, empathy and self-control.

This program teaches the four main skill sets central to conflict resolution: active listening, emotional intelligence, authentic communication and collaborative problem solving.

  • ACTIVE COMMUNICATION involves fully engaging another by not only hearing their words but also understanding their unique underlying emotions and interests.
  • EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE refers to how well you recognize, understand and manage your own emotions and those of others.
  • AUTHENTIC COMMUNICATION encompasses both verbal and non-verbal forms of expression.
  • COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING shifts the goal of win-lose resolutions to that of finding win-win, mutually beneficial agreements to specific and everyday problems and disagreements.

Your program text, InJustice INACCORD, offers a roadmap for the specific skills of mediation and the specialized skills of the INACCORD Conflict Analysis System. The companion text, Touchstone Skills, offers a comprehensive set of competencies to improve your ability to communicate effectively and assertively in all situations.

The program includes weekly web-based practice sessions using a wide variety of case studies. In these sessions, you can begin by simply listening in and then move to volunteering as a disputant and eventually as a professional mediator. Each session is archived allowing you to listen at any time during the training.

Workplace Mediation and conflict resolution helps companies preserve relationships among employees and is far more cost effective than legal proceedings. The conflict resolution process is confidential and, in the case of Mediators Without Borders, focuses on empowering all the parties in a dispute.

Workplace Conflict Resolution benefits employees and employers by helping:

  • Reduce stress and absenteeism
  • Retain valuable employees
  • Discover repetitive conflicts in the workplace
  • Prevent misunderstandings from escalating
  • Save time, money and reputation

Restorative justice seeks to repair harm and address the root causes of crime, even to the point of transforming unjust systems and structures. Restorative Justice training is unique to the criminal justice system and involves victims and perpetrators, as well as the larger community affected, in a process of repair and restoration of all parties. Alumnus of our program include criminal justice students, police and prison employees, social workers in community agencies and laypersons wanting to help their communities address crime in restorative and transformative methods.

What Our Students Are Saying

Our students appreciate the one on one guidance from their professional instructor as well as the opportunity to practice their new skills in a dynamic web based format.

This was my first-ever online course, so I had apprehensions about whether I would be able to connect with the instructor and the other members of the group. However, I quickly discovered that considerable interaction was possible through the threaded discussion each week. The course requirements were quite rigorous, and the reading assignments in particular were worthy of graduate course designation. Our written assignments had to be thoughtful, well researched, and documented. I was pleased with the presentation of materials in the four weekly lectures, and Claire was both accessible and supportive throughout.

Paul W. Hughes

The cultural diversity dialogue with the participants was the most informative and helpful part of the class. I enjoyed the whole experience. The instructor was compassionate, articulate and quick to respond to our needs.

Suzy Martinez

Great course! The lectures were very informative and comprehensive- better than other online coursework I’ve done through other universities. The online discussions were also good and more active than some other online courses I’ve done.

Susan Taigman

I feel more prepared to arbitrate after eight weeks of class than I did to practice law after three years of classes. I haven’t practiced [law] for a long time so it was a great way to refresh my thinking and knowledge. I thought this class was appropriately demanding. I feel prepared, knowledgeable, and totally satisfied with the course and content.

Jane Saltzman, JD

I would rate my overall online classroom experience as excellent. My instructor offered lots of positive feedback and the coursework was excellent in meeting my expectations and learning objectives!

Dr. Victoria King

The training was far better than my expectations! I began learning a “life” skill that I had never learned. The instructor was enthusiastic and brought the material to life.

Steve Swanson

The speakers and information were great and really held our interest. Role playing allowed us to experience the roles from all perspectives. Invaluable!
